Well, it was fun while it lasted...

More by accident than by design, Geoff and I have bid a hasty and underwhelming goodbye to Kodamakitty and Galfridus. Thankfully we were able to get a decent number of screenshots and I now have a spiffy name to use as my cyber de plume. It was just getting too expensive, in light of reasons examined here before, and when we didn't update the new expiration dates on our accounts, it just quietly faded away.

I am experiencing mildly mixed emotions about not having the game to play, not that I think about it very often. I definitely liked the battle style and was able to pick it up better than I thought I would. I liked having my own little person online and being able to interact with other players (though the community wasn't really as strong as I think I would have liked). And the much-touted marriage mode required a lucky rabbit's foot, a full moon and a boat load of gil to pull off (I'm only mostly kidding about the rabbit's foot and moon phase). I think if we had managed to pull that off, we might have stayed on longer, but why make it so bloody difficult? Who cares if everyone in the world decided to get married and then dissolve their union - can't be any more difficult than the seasonal festivals with their unexplained customs and puzzles (I mean, really, hit armor with a stick?)

I might have decided to stay on solo, but that would require an ongoing $13 a month, plus the most recent expansion pack. It also would continue to sit, silently, waiting for the odd four hour block where I could run around, hurry up and wait, and maybe actually fight in something. I've got plenty of stuff lying around the house taking up my spaces in my "to be done sometime in this lifetime" inventory.

Still, on a positive note, it was cool to be a gamer geek, even if only for a short moment in time. I found that I was actually much more effective at getting parties together than I originally thought (which was one of the reasons I went with a white mage in the first place) and that I really liked the thrill of vanquishing foes (especially the squishy caterpillar thingys).

I am not sure how much longer GeemuBatsu will hang around, anymore than I am sure that anyone is randomly reading this, but it's been fun and I am hoping that another avenue for more reasonably priced MMORPG will present itself soon.

Stay of execution

Have you ever wondered why there isn't a household discount for multiple players of FFXI? I really should write in and ask sometime. Galfridus and I are on two PS2s in our house and we have to pay for two separate Content IDs in order to play at the same time. It just seems to me that if someone is trying to encourage couples or groups to play that clan discounts or something could be useful.

Speaking of finances, the discussion came up once again as to whether or not to continue playing FFXI. The pros and cons ran thusly:

CON
$26 per month = at least one tank of gas
Trying to level up to Rank 3 together means that we either both go online or not at all
When we do go online no one else is available to party
Any friends we do make during a party play a lot more often and level up beyond us
Need at least three good hours at a go to be worthwhile

PRO
Darn good fun
Blue mage has a great hat
$26 isn't that bad if you don't think too hard about it
Kodamakitty would miss Galfridus's seductive taru dance

So for now, we're staying online, but it could become a casualty of not enough time and better things to do with our money (we might even go see a first run movie - with popcorn!). We went online last night to get a feel for the lay of the land and remembered just how much fun the game can be (though we have yet to kill that stupid dragon). It seems like there's still a decent number of folks out there, though not as many as you might think given that FFXI is now on the XBox 360.

Gotta go, hopefully we'll get that dragon tonight!

Happy Birthday!

Just wanted to add another note to wish Galfridus the happiest of birthdays!

Love, Liza

Hitting armor with a stick

Well, it was fun for a little while...

The latest Mog adventure/crisis/run-around-and-hope-people-are-nice-and-don't-think-you're-lame project involves getting a wooden katana from one Mog, then running around outside until you find another Mog, and then running around some more to find a piece of armor that may or may not engage in battle with you. The fun increases exponentially when you are joined by a bunch of other people, since an unlimited number of people can take a whack at the armor before it runs away like a demon stinky-cheese man. It's kinda like a big moving pinata. You get the joy of deciding to try to run around after the dude (who is on permanent flee) or you can wait around like a dolt and try to catch him when he comes back around.

Once you have completely tired of this bit of fun (and don't let my late night grousing fool you, it is kinda fun, at least for the first couple of armor sightings) you then take your katana back to the mog who gave it to you and they measure how much haunted armor mojo you were able to absorb with it. They then give you mochi for one of the races, which sound a lot like Filipino Rice cake, if you know of which I speak. Anywho, using one of these things turns you into a boy (this has been going on for a few days, so I trust I am not giving away any surprises). You get to watch yourself run around (and the kids do run funny) and then you can either wait for it to end, or you can end it yourself.

Now, I think if you kneecap enough bad guys (I'm a taru, so it's looks like I'm trying to take him out one femur at a time) I think you get upgraded weapons, but I don't know if it's worth it. At this point, I am really hoping for a festival that will result in a kick-ass treat for white mages.

So, if you don't have anything better to do and farming has lost it's thrill, this festival can be interesting in a short-term sort of way. I am sure I am simplifying the whole thing, but since I tend to play after work and stay up way too late, grasping the complexity of the situation would require more thought. And then I wouldn't have anything left over to blog with!

Xenwulf has been reincarnated!!!

That's right, Xenwulf the mighty mithra monk has perished, and has been reincarnated as, Xenwulf the tiny tarutaru monk.

I was sad to see the mithra go but she died due to negligence (apparently not exercising your characters for three months kill them PERMANENTLY >_<) and annoyance of people hitting on her (started to get creepy, especially after I would say "I am guy").

Anyway, I am now playing a MALE tarutaru monk, and thanks to the help of my fellow tarutaru, Galfridus and Kodamakitty, I have leveled very quickly. I still have a long way to go though, like regaining my subjob, redoing my quests, redoing my missions and beating the dragon again.

Oh well, all in good time.
